Stopping Negative Thoughts
Here is a question that is often asked about overcoming anxiety and stress:
Are there any tips on stopping negative memories or thoughts coming back into your mind over and over again?
First off, I would like to start out by saying that a memory or thought is just that. This thought or memory needs to be dealt with otherwise you will never be able to let it go.
One thing that has worked to help me stop negative thoughts is to write them down. As soon as the thought comes to your mind, write it down. When you have time such as at break or when you are at home, take out the paper you wrote the negative thought down on and read it.
Now I want you to read it out loud. Take a good look at the thought or memory you wrote down, and replay that memory or thought in your mind. Now think about the core of the emotion associated with that thought. How do you really feel? Hurt? Ashamed? Scared? Try to take a good look at the situation and see if you can look at it from a different angle. If someone hurt you, maybe try to look at the situation from their point of view. Did you provoke them? Maybe you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Perhaps they are just mean.
The key here is that you need to deal with the feeling behind the negative thought or memory. The feelings are what triggers us into feeling that same way again as we replay the situation. Sometimes just writing down the memory and reading it outloud is enough to take the negative feeling from that memory.
I always tell myself that everything happens for a reason and there are at least 2 sides to every feeling.
Keep Moving Forward!
