What are the factors that trigger anxiety and stress?

Posted by Dave on January 12, 2010

When it comes right down to it, there is an emotional trigger that happens to cause the anxiety or stress.

The underlying feeling that may trigger anxiety and stress in a traffic jam for example might be the fear of being confined or restrained. Maybe in the past you were restrained or trapped and now whenever you are in a sistuation where you cannot move (traffic Jam) these emotions surface and trigger the anxiety and stress.

Another example might be driving a car. The fear of driving a car might be triggered by a past accident or a fearful memory that was implanted into your mind as a youngster. Now when you try to drive that fear manifests itself as anxiety and stress.

These are just a couple of examples, but what I am trying to say is that most of the time there is an underlying feeling that triggers the anxiety and stress.

3 Christmas Shopping Tips To Reduce Anxiety

Posted by Dave on December 14, 2009

Now that Christmas season is upon us, I have put together some tips to help reduce anxiety and still get your Christmas shopping done.

  • The first tip and most obvious is to avoid the stores and crowds completely. You can do this by doing your Christmas shopping over the Internet and having the gifts either shipped to you or the person you are giving the gift to.
  • The second tip you can do to get your Christmas shopping done and reduce holiday anxiety is to get up early and hit the stores right when they open. By doing your shopping early in the day when the store first opens you can usually avoid the regular crowds that are there later in the day. Of course the closer it gets to Christmas the more crowded the stores get no matter what time of day.
  • The third tip is to have a friend or relative do the shopping for you. A great way to do this is to go online and find a picture and description of each gift that you want to purchase. Print out the picture and description and what store it can be found at and ask a friend or relative to pick these items up for you while they are doing their Christmas shopping.

I hope that you found these tips helpful in reducing the Holiday stress for you this Christmas season and also to help you to avoid an anxiety attack.

A Breathing Exercise To Overcome Anxiety

Posted by Dave on October 31, 2009

I did a video showing you a breathing exercise that I use on my job to help get me through a stressful situation and to overcome the onset of an anxiety attack.

{seesmic_video:{“url_thumbnail”:{“value”:”http://t.seesmic.tv/thumbnail/LPMeJh6CEy_th1.jpg”}”title”:{“value”:”A Breathing Exercise To Overcome Anxiety ”}”videoUri”:{“value”:”http://www.seesmic.com/video/FYSclHtMud”}}}

Just to recap, find a place where you can be alone for 2 minutes, take a deep breath in for the count five, hold it for the count of two and exhale for the count of seven.

You will feel refreshed and also have a good supply of oxygen to your brain. This helps to reduce stress and overcome anxiety.

Can Yard Work Relieve Stress and Anxiety?

Posted by Dave on October 26, 2009

Can Yard Work Relieve Stress and Anxiety?

You bet it can. Doing any type of physical activity can help you to reduce stress and anxiety. This works in a couple of ways:

    1) It takes your mind off of whatever the thing is that is keeping your mind spinning with negative worrying thoughts.
    2) The physical activity helps you to replenish your oxygen supply with some good fresh oxygen for your brain. This is also why deep breathing helps to relax you. Nothing better than an extra boost of oxygen to refresh your brain.

Now if what you are stressing about is the yard work, than just doing it and getting it done will also help you. Just think, The yard work is done now. What am I worrying about then?

Take some deep breaths and relax :-)

Overcome Social Anxiety

Have you ever been afraid that the whole world is watching you? There is a better life waiting for you, but you have to be interested in overcoming social anxiety. Without getting treatment, social anxiety can be a horrible emotional problem.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy has been found to be highly successful in overcoming social anxiety. People who are not successful in helping to correct this problem are not willing to stick with simple techniques that can be practiced at home. If a person is motivated enough then this treatment will provide the methods and strategies to lessen social anxiety.

Here is some information I found about Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT):

CBT to overcome social anxiety disorder

I hope this helps you to understand CBT and how it is used to treat Social Anxiety Disorder.

Anxiety Relief – Things to do during Panic Attacks

Posted by Dave on October 15, 2009

When people are in the throws of panic attacks, they really cannot deal with the situation at hand. Here are some anxiety relief ideas to follow when you are experiencing one of these attacks:

It matters little whether you feel bewildered, unsteady, unreal or frightened. These feelings are merely an exaggeration of a normal body reacting to stress. Try to be as comfortable as you can without escaping. Try taking in a deep breath for the count of 5, hold it for 2 seconds and let it out for the count of 7. This deep breathing technique will replenish the oxygen in your lungs and brain and help you relax.

If you happen to be on a street, lean against a store wall or a post and do the breathing technique. If you happen to be at a store’s cosmetic department, try finding a quiet counter or corner and take some very deep breaths and even close your eyes. I have also found that sometimes a stall in the restroom can be a quick escape.

What you do not want to do is jump into your car and drive home in fear from the panic attack.

Quick Tip For Overcoming A Anxiety Attack

Posted by Dave on October 11, 2009

Try to start overcoming anxiety and move into attitude of peace and calm. That sentence relates to most people in the world today. With our overworked and hectic schedules we are bound to feel anxious. These anxieties can stand to be cured if only you develop some consciousness regarding opportunities for self help. A little bit of anxiety is necessary, but excessive anxiety is toxic! Here is a tip to help you in anxiety relief:

We find that we get uncomfortable and begin to panic when we feel that the situation we are faced with is difficult to manage or unmanageable. If you discover the reasons for your anxiety, you have won at least 50% of the battle. The key to getting anxiety relief is identifying the early warning signs of a panic attack.

How does your body feel? Increased heart rate? Sweating? Pacing? Shaking?

When you sense a anxiety attack coming on take 5 good long deep breaths and you will be surprised at the difference this makes in taking your anxiety down a notch.

Overcoming Anxiety and Reducing Stress

Posted by Dave on October 5, 2009

Lets talk a little bit about overcoming anxiety and stress management. Stress and anxiety is a learned feeling reaction to an event. Let me explain what I am talking about.

Lets say you wake up in the morning and it is raining. If you have to drive to work in heavy traffic, you might say to yourself “God, I hate the rain! Now the drive to work is really going to suck!”. You have already set yourself up for high anxiety and a stressful drive to work.

Now lets say you woke up to the rain and said to yourself “This rain is great! We really needed it. Boy it really smells good whenever it rains out.” You have now eliminated that initial feeling of anxiety and you are most likely going to have a less stressful drive to work.

If stress and anxiety were caused by events instead of feelings, we would all feel the same when it rains.

Changing the way we feel is key in overcoming anxiety and reducing stress.
